Ages 10 through adult. The worksheets and activities in this book can be used to help individuals with communication disorders, developmental disabilities, autism, and other disorders function more effectively in everyday situations in which behavior is observed by others. Going to the store, using a laundromat, talking on the telephone, ordering food in a restaurant, and other everyday situations are presented. Large, reproducible pictures are used to demonstrate both appropriate and inappropriate behaviors in situations at home and in the community. Being courteous, taking turns, waiting patiently, treating others with respect, and other important skills are emphasized.

The book is divided into two sections:

• Talking About Everyday Situations. Students are asked to respond to questions on reproducible worksheets that relate to familiar experiences such as shopping for groceries, riding the bus, and going to the doctor. Rules for "WHAT TO DO" and "WHAT NOT TO DO" are included in each of the lessons. These rules can be discussed with students. By helping children to distinguish appropriate from inappropriate behaviors, they will be able to develop more effective social relationships with others and will experience greater success in achieving personal goals.
• Social Interaction Stories. Brief story situations are presented orally by the instructor. Each situation is accompanied by two pictures. The first picture shows an "inappropriate behavior" and the second shows an "appropriate behavior." The picture showing inappropriate behavior should be discussed first. Ask the student to identify the problem shown in the picture. Then discuss the picture that shows socially appropriate behavior.

A reproducible Basic Social Skills Checklist is included in the book. This checklist can be used to assess students' specific needs and to monitor progress.

All of the pictures and worksheets may be reproduced for use in instruction.
