Bilingual Picture Symbol Communication Resource (#44403-IN)

Ages 4 through adult. Here is a collection of communication picture boards that can be used to facilitate communication or to teach basic vocabulary skills in English and Spanish. Each board is presented in both languages. These boards are suitable for students with communication disorders, AAC needs, or students learning a second language. Boards relating to mealtime, clothing, basic needs, recreation, and other topics are included.

This book was created primarily for use with individuals who are unable to use speech effectively to communicate basic needs and share information with others. The picture symbols also have useful applications in the teaching of basic reading skills. Picture symbols help students to associate printed words with the concepts that they represent. They also help students understand how the spoken language is represented in print.

The book is organized into the following sections:

  • Picture Symbol Vocabulary Practice - Set 1. Use the boards in this section to teach basic vocabulary and simple sentences beginning with "I want" and "I don't want." The boards target vocabulary relevant to basic needs and daily routines. Ask students to respond to questions by pointing to the picture symbols.
  • Picture Symbol Vocabulary Practice - Set 2. The picture symbols in this section include symbols from a greater variety of grammatical categories than those included in Set 1. Rather than using a single symbol to represent phrases such as "I want to drink," the boards in this section include separate symbols for the words that are critical for comprehending the meaning of the message.
  • Make a Sentence. The activities in this section challenge students to use communication boards to create simple sentences. Each board includes three or more verbs, making it possible for students to create a variety of sentences.

Suggestions are included for adapting the boards for use with speakers of different Spanish dialects. All of the boards may be reproduced.
